Dr Alexander Rabitsch is a veterinary consultant on animal welfare in live animal transport with extensive experience as an animal transport inspector in Austria. Not only has he inspected countless lorries used for the transport of farm animals, but has also trained public veterinary officers, lorry drivers and other people involved in live animal transport. He has thus helped to improve the treatment of transported animals and limit their suffering despite the largely insufficient protection offered by the present EU Regulation (1/2005).
During the 8hours campaign, he provided valuable background information on the actual needs of transported animals. Among other things, it is worth mentioning his presentation on ‘Problems related to checks of international transports – inapplicability of some norms. Discrepancies
between the social legislation for drivers and the allowed transport times for animals’ at the 8hours conference in Malta.
Dr Rabitsch has now decided to channel his experience on the welfare of animals during transport into the book ‘Tiertransporte – Anspruch Und Wirklichkeit’ (‘Animal Transport – Assertions and Reality’). In the book, published by Schaefermueller, he analyses the ethical, commercial, veterinary and legal issues around live animal transport.
The book, which for now is only available in German, will be released in October 2014. It can be ordered directly from the publisher’s website or through bookshops and websites.
