The Kentucky Livestock Care Standards Commission has issued rules that will prohibit the confinement of calves used for veal in crates so small, the animals are largely immobilised for their short lives.

The new rule, which takes full effect in 2018, makes Kentucky the eighth state to ban this inhumane practice.

 

“The commission made important progress by banning cruel veal crates, but it has a lot more work to do to fulfil its mandate of creating meaningful standards of care,” said a spokesperson for the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS).
