Brussels, 8 May 2012: This morning the Environment and Transport Committees of the European Parliament voted on draft opinions responding to the Commission’s report on live animal transport of November 2011. The opinions of these two committees will inform the text on which the Agriculture Committee will vote in the coming weeks, before being submitted for vote in the plenary session later this year.
In today’s vote, both the Transport and Environment Committees call on ‘the European Commission to submit a proposal which takes into account the spirit of Written Declaration 49/2011 of the European Parliament supporting an 8-hour limit when transporting live animals’.
The full documents will be available on the European Parliament’s website in the coming days.
The 8hours petition against long-distance live animal transport has collected nearly 1,100,000 signatures. It is still possible to sign it online on the 8hours website.
