Coop Italia operates the largest supermarket chain in Italy. Over the last few years, it has increasingly integrated animal welfare policies into its supply chains, starting with cage-free eggs and gradually expanding to cover other animal products.
In April 2013, Coop Italia revamped the section of its website related to the company’s environmental policies, which now contains a specific section on animal welfare. This includes farm animal welfare, but also the rejection of cosmetics testing on animals and other animal welfare issues. (All web pages and articles on the Coop Italia website are available in Italian only.)
This is the first time that an Italian retailer has dedicated so much space to animal welfare on its website, clearly listing its animal welfare policies, including a section on farm animal welfare.
Coop Italia has expressed its intention to develop such policies further, and in this endeavour it has invited Annamaria Pisapia to support them. Annamaria will also have a blog on animal welfare on the Coop website. You can read the first article on her blog by clicking here.
