The US-based Humane Farm Animal Care (HFAC) is the leading non-profit certification organisation dedicated to improving the lives of farm animals in food production from birth through to slaughter. It is supported by over 65 animal welfare organisations.

HFAC manages the Certified Humane Raised and Handled standard, launched in 2003, which is a guarantee for consumers that the approved food products have come from facilities that meet precise, objective standards for farm animal treatment. So far, over 100 companies, representing hundreds of farms and millions of farm animals, have been certified.

The aim of the programme is to improve the lives of farm animals by driving consumer demand for kinder and more responsible farm animal practices.

With the goal of helping consumers find Certified Humane approved products, in 2012 the organisation launched a free app for iPhone and Android. The app, initially launched for the US market only, uses GPS to identify nearby supermarkets and displays them on an interactive map. In addition to finding supermarkets nearby, users can “buy online” from farmers and ranchers who are Certified Humane certified.

At the end of September 2014, HFAC announced that the app has been upgraded to include shops in Canada, Brazil and Peru. Users now can also choose between English, Portuguese, Spanish and French language.

It will therefore be easier to find eggs, dairy products and meat from Certified Humane certified farms in shops nearby, or order them online.
The app can be downloaded for free by searching for Certified Humane on your iPhone or Android. You can find more information on the app’s web page.

You can read the full article on the launch of the app for Canada, Brazil and Peru on the Certified Humane website.
