The online classified pet trade is booming, and with this growth come serious challenges, not only for animal welfare, but also for buyers, public health and other issues.
Platforms such as eBay are regularly used by rogue puppy farm breeders to trade animals as if they were merchandise. VIER PFOTEN has launched a dedicated website to ask eBay to establish mandatory seller identity verification, which would require sellers to provide a form of identification to sell animals, thus preventing anonymous, untraceable sales.
This topic will be discussed in the conference “The Illegal Online Puppy Trade: towards a safer EU for animals and people online”, organised by VIER PFOTEN International, Eurogroup for Animals and the Austrian Presidency of the European Union, which will take place in Brussels on 21st November.
This event will showcase positive examples of how Member States and the EU institutions are tackling specific problems, and how the EU Animal Health Law can contribute to a safer online trade in companion animals.
I will moderate the first session, in which an overview of the situation will be presented by distinguished speakers after opening speeches by the Austrian Chief Veterinary Officer, Dr Ulrich Herzog, and by the President of VIER PFOTEN, Heli Dungler.
The event will take place in Brussels at Bozar, Rue Ravenstein 23 (Entrance on Rue Baron Horta, 11), Rotunda Bertouille.
